*Sukkot is connected to the “Feast of the Ingathering.” This agricultural festival was connected to the time of year when farmers in ancient Israel gathered into the storehouses all of their crops from the field. Since we are also celebrating the harvest during Sukkot it is tradtional to eat lots of seasonal fruits and vegetables.
Ingredients
3 pounds granny smith apples
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1/2 cup light brown sugar, packed
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/3 cup all-purpose flour
1/3 cup granulated sugar
1/3 cup rolled oats
4 tablespoons butter, cold
1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans
Directions
1) Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
2) Peel, core and chop the apples. Toss apples with lemon juice. In a separate bowl, combine the brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg; add to the apples and toss to combine.
3) In another bowl combine flour, sugar and oats. Cut butter into 8 small pieces, and cut butter into flour with a pastry blender or two forks until mixture is crumbly.
4) Stir in the chopped nuts.
5) Spread apple mixture in greased 9 inch square baking dish. Sprinkle apples with flour mixture.
6) Bake for 30 to 45 minutes, or until apples are tender.
