A survey of US Jewish voters polled after May’s conflict between Israel and the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip finds that a quarter believes that Israel is “an apartheid state.”
Also, 34% believe that Israel’s treatment of Palestinians is similar to US racism and 22% believe that Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinians.
The survey of more than 800 self-identified American Jewish voters was conducted between June 28 and July 11 by GBAO Strategies on behalf of the non-partisan Jewish Electorate Institute.
Climate change (32%) and voting rights (26%) were the top two issues respondents want US President Joe Biden to focus on, with Israel way down the list at 4% between affordable housing at 6% and Iran at 3%.
A sizable minority of respondents also do not place US financial assistance to Israel as important (25%) while a majority 58% support restricting US aid so it doesn’t go to settlement expansion in Judea and Samaria.
In a statement, the Jewish Electorate Institute described the survey as the first major poll of Jewish voters since Biden was elected president and the hostilities between Israel and Hamas ended, finding that American Jews overwhelmingly support the Democratic Party and Biden.
“The results demonstrate that Jewish Americans trust Biden more than Trump by at least a three-to-one margin on key issues including fighting antisemitism, handling the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and dealing with the Iranian nuclear issue,” the statement said.
