One of the least understood, yet most intriguing and stated purposes of Jesus, is this: “to create in himself, one new man.” (Ephesians 2:15)
This begs the question: Who is the One New Man that Jesus the Messiah intended to create in himself? How can one recognize him? Is the One New Man Jewish or Gentile? Both? Neither? What are the distinguishing features of this One New Man?
Traditionally, the One New Man of Ephesians 2:15 has been interpreted as referring to the “church” and the spiritual oneness of all its members. However, a closer look at the passage clearly shows that the One New Man is not talking about the “Christian church.” The text is not in a “church” related passage–the term “church” is not even used in this context. No this is an “Israel” related passage, as we will see. Clearly, the One New Man is inseparably related to Israel.
