The Republican’s victory in the House of Representatives on Tuesday leaves many in Israel wondering whether President Barack Obama’s stymied domestic agenda will encourage him to concentrate more on foreign policy, including the Middle East peace process.
The Republicans are expected to take a tougher stance on Iran and put pressure on the Obama administration to be easier on Israel. Eric Cantor (R-Virginia), who is expected to become House Majority Leader and thus the highest ranking Jewish member of the House, told Haaretz last week that a “ Congress would have a tangible impact on improving the U.S.-Israel relationship.”
“The system of checks and balances permits us to apply oversight to the administration’s foreign policy,” he said. “If we regain the majority, we will use our larger platform to make the case that a strong Israel is firmly in the strategic and moral interests of the United States. We will press the administration not to pressure Israel into making concessions that will compromise Israel’s already tenuous security.”
John Boehner (R-Ohio), expected to be the new Speaker of the House of Representatives, is considered to be pro-Israel, despite recent criticism by Jewish Democrats for his support of Tea Party candidate Rich Iott who used to participate in reenactions of World War II battles wearing a Nazi officer uniform.
Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Florida) is expected to replace Howard Berman (D-California) as the chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Ros-Lehtinen is one of the most active House members on the issues related to Israel.
I voted an entire Republican ticket. I have no confidence in the Republicans, but I had to choose the lesser of two evils. There is no doubt that the Democrats hate Israel with extreme prejudice. The Republicans are a LITTLE better. I’m terribly ashamed of the way President Obama treated the PM of Israel and I want it known I DID NOT VOTE FOR HIM! I trust President Obama about as far as I can throw him and I’m a small person. The Americans wanted a black President so bad that they were willing to make a deal with the devil and now its time to pay the piper!!!
If Obama turns against Israel he will bring the wrath of God against us.Why is not Congress impeaching him as he has gone against our constitution several times. I personally believe the Anti-Christ is here and He is the Man of Sin.He is doing nothing but evil destroying the United States so many of us has fought for.We need not to be silent but rise up & fight for our rights and for Israel, even if it means thousands joining Israel’s military. The only best solution is to get Obama packing. He states being a Christian but speaks as the Devil. It really looks like he is pushing us into Revelations in God’s word. Is there even the smallest thing He has done for America? I think not! Get rid of him.Impeach Obama!
