Jim Hutchens
Dr. James M. Hutchens is a man on a mission for Israel–a mission to make God’s purposes for Israel and the Jewish people an unavoidable issue. As President of The Jerusalem Connection, International and Editor of The Jerusalem Connection Report, he is on the forward edge of the battle area of informing, educating and activating the Christian community on issues related to Israel, from a Biblical perspective. From his military experience, Jim is well acquainted with the concept of “Mission.” He came to faith in Christ as an enlisted paratrooper, under the ministry of a chaplain. After college and seminary, Jim returned to the Army as a chaplain. Decorated for personal bravery in Vietnam, including the Purple Heart, where he served with the famous 173rd Airborne Brigade, and later with the celebrated “Green Berets,” he retired with the rank of Brigadier General in 1994. His book, Beyond Combat , tells of his experience as a combat chaplain in Vietnam.
Dr. Hutchens was ordained to the ministry in 1962 and has served, concurrent with his chaplain duties, as a church planter and senior pastor for over 24 years. His wife, Patty, is an exhibiting artist and teacher at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C. and the Northern Virginia Community College system. The Hutchens have three married children and eleven grand children. Jim and Patty tell of their life-long love for Israel in their newly released book, Guilty: Keeping God’s Covenant Love with Israel. “The General” now brings his military leadership skills and pastoral devotion to duty to accomplish the mission of The Jerusalem Connection, International. I read with great excitement this blog. It is wonderful that you are bringing us together Sephardi Jews. Many of us, we have faced discrimination inside and outside the Jewish community. I was born in Mexico City. My family was living in the Ottoman Empire and persecuted, immigrated to Spain. Persecuted again they immigrated to a little town in the mountains in the South of Mexico, a town so inaccessible that you can tell the fear they felt. The historian of the town where they settled, wrote how my family settled in this town and where they came from.
I did not discover these records until years later, in a web post, while I had already immigrated to the United States and just confirmed what I already knew. I feel the Lord is getting us aware of our origin to bring us to the Holy Land. He wants us to know that we are loved and he cares for us even if we are alone in our faith
My siblings and I knew of our origin but we were never talked about it at home to protect us from antisemitism. My great grandfather never taught my mother any religion. As I grew, I saw my mother reading her Bible in the mornings and at night. My father was Catholic but also his last name was adopted to prevent persecution in Spain. The records of their families are in Mexico and Spain.
The problem we have in Mexico is that many of us Sephardi Jews know our origin, but exists great discrimination in the Mexican society against us so we still don’t talk much about it. It is not only discrimination from many in the society in general but also from Ashkenazim Jews, European Jews, who see us as less Jewish, and don’t accept us. Many of us Sephardi Jews, if we trace our origin, we are originally from the promise land.
We don’t want to renounce to our Christianity. I learned ancient Hebrew to teach it to my child, and teach him the Torah. I consider myself a complete Jewish woman, because I believe in Jesus as our Messiah. No, I don’t want to do Aliyah even when I love Israel, because I believe that in his second coming the Messiah is going to reunite us wherever we are, and that we were dispersed to live under the authority of other nations until his second coming because our disobedience. He is going to give us peace and bring us back to the Negev without the strife and wars that our precious Israel is facing. Meanwhile, we are here, practicing our faith in the U.S. in freedom, G-d bless the U.S. We pray for the peace of Israel and for this site, that G-d bless you and keep you!
Pray on this: Father, you have said “we have not because we ask not.” We ask therefore, that by your Holy Spirit you would inspire President Obama to see the Covenant promises of God concerning Israel and the Jews as the ultimate authority regarding the Israel/Palestinian peace process. In Jesus name, AMEN!
Yahweh bless you Beatriz– He will show the plans he has for you. Jeremiah 29:11
