Netanyahu lauds biblical bond with America ahead of fourth of July

By United With Israel— Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Reuven Rivlin and other Israeli leaders participated in American Independence Day celebrations at US Ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro’s residence in Herzliya on Wednesday, expressing congratulations and stressing the close and “unbreakable” bond between the two countries. (Photo via United With Israel) “This is a great day because on the 4th of July, all Israelis unite with our American brothers and sisters. It’s our celebration too,” stated Netanyahu. “That’s because the history of our two countries is remarkably intertwined. The Founding Fathers of America were inspired by the Bible, and specifically by the Book of Exodus, by the dream of building freedom in a new Promised Land. And as you stand in the Chamber of the American Congress, you see right across you the image of one man—Moses—with a quote from the Bible.” The Israeli leader continued to extol the heritage and values that both nations share, noting “the vision of justice and the vision of peace espoused by the Prophets of Israel” that motivated American leaders. “But just as our heritage inspired America, America inspired us. If you read the Founding Fathers of Zionism, you see how powerful and inspirational the American Revolution was—the ideas of freedom and liberty.” “On behalf of all Israelis, I wish all Americans a happy 4th of July. God bless Israel and God bless the United States of America,” the Israeli premier concluded. “Our relationship is first and foremost an emotional one,” President Reuven Rivlin told the crowd. “Growing up in the years after the Second World War, when the world was divided between...
The case for Israel is rooted in more than security

The case for Israel is rooted in more than security

By: JEFF JACOBY, Boston Globe— NOSES WENT OUT of joint and knickers got in a twist when Israel’s new deputy foreign minister delivered her inaugural speech to the Jewish state’s diplomatic corps. “We need to get back to the basic truth of our right to this land,” said Tzipi Hotovely, who is running the foreign ministry’s day-to-day operations, while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu retains the title of foreign minister. The land of Israel belongs to the Jewish people, she declared, and their claim to it is as old as the Bible. “It’s important to say this” when making Israel’s case before the world, she said, and not to focus solely on Israel’s security interests. Of course security is a profound concern, Hotovely observed, but arguments grounded in justice, morality, and deep historical rights are stronger. She even quoted the medieval Jewish sage Rashi, who wrote that Genesis opens with God’s creation of the world to preempt any subsequent charge that the Jewish claim to the land was without merit. Needless to say, Hotovely’s message was scorned on the left as primitive zealotry. “Her remarks raised eyebrows among many in the audience,” the Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported. One diplomat said his colleagues “were in shock” at the suggestion that they should cite the Torah when advocating for Israel abroad. Diplomacy is not Bible class. Yet why should Israel and its envoys shrink from making the fullest defense of Jewish rights in what was always the Jewish homeland? Though modern Zionism didn’t arise as a political movement until the 1800s, the land of Israel has always been at the core of...
‘ALLY’: MICHAEL OREN’S MEMOIR TO EXPOSE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION’S ABUSE OF ISRAEL

‘ALLY’: MICHAEL OREN’S MEMOIR TO EXPOSE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION’S ABUSE OF ISRAEL

By: Joel Pollack, Breitbart— Former Israeli ambassador Michael Oren is set to release a new memoir June 23: Ally: My Journey Across the American-Israeli Divide. The book tells the story of Oren’s four years (2009-13) as Israel’s representative in Washington–and reveals just how hostile the Obama administration is towards Israel. Though he argues Obama is not anti-Israel, Oren notes that his administration did all it could to bully Israel into compliance with its hopelessly naïve new agenda in the Middle East. Breitbart News was shown an uncorrected galley of the text, on the promise that we would not quote from it. Suffice to say that the Obama administration–and to a lesser extent Hillary Clinton, who was responsible for carrying out its foreign policy at the time–emerge looking ill-informed at best, thuggish at worst. In one episode, State Department staffers cheer as a senior official slams Israel’s envoy. In another, Susan Rice does her best impression of a Chicago mobster, with an implied threat. Oren is uniquely placed to chronicle the deterioration of relations between the two government–just as he was Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s best choice to limit the damage. An American Jew who became an Israeli citizen, Oren understands both countries and their cultures. A distinguished historian, he has a keen sense for detail, and his book weaves personal recollections and anecdotes into a detailed, even forensic, narrative of diplomatic disenchantment. Oren encounters an administration stacked with left-wing professors and their students, who are attempting a perilous experiment in American foreign relations, and who treat Israel, at best, as their guinea pig. He begins to worry that...
Barack Obama: Born-Again Jew

Barack Obama: Born-Again Jew

By: Daniel Greenfield, Front Page Mag— Daniel Greenfield, a Shillman Journalism Fellow at the David Horowitz Freedom Center, is a New York writer focusing on radical Islam. Obama introduced himself to the nation as the son of black and white parents. He has gone back and forth between Christianity and Islam like a philanderer in a bar. Now he has added a third religion and race to complete his identity politics trinity. At the last White House Chanukah dinner, he claimed to have a Jewish soul. At a synagogue speech last month, he called himself “an honorary member of the tribe”. Now his former senior advisor has quoted him as saying, “I think I am the closest thing to a Jew that has ever sat in this office.” Of course Barack Obama has also been Irish. He stated, “I consider myself an honorary Italian, because I love all things Italian”. Newsweek dubbed him “The First Woman President” in 2008 for “bending gender conventions” and promoted him to “The First Gay President” four years later. Cabinet Secretary Lu and Congressman Honda argued that he was “The First Asian American President”. If you make up an ethnic group or race, by tomorrow Barack Obama will be a member of it. By next week, he will be lecturing it on why it isn’t living up to their shared values. Obama’s Jewish toadies, like his multicultural frog pond toadies of all races and ethnicities, have been trying to sell Barack Obama as a “Born-Again Jew” for seven years. His left-wing mentor Abner Mikva claimed during the original campaign, “When this all is over, people...
Column One: The new government’s war on BDS

Column One: The new government’s war on BDS

By: CAROLINE GLICK, JPOST— Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s new government is less than a month old, but it’s already apparent that it is different from its predecessors. And if it continues on its current diplomatic trajectory, it may do something that its six predecessors failed to accomplish. Netanyahu’s new government may improve Israel’s position internationally. The stakes are high. Over the years, Israel has largely concentrated its efforts on developing the tools to contend with its military challenges. But as we have seen over the past decade and a half, Israel’s capacity to fight and defeat its enemies is not limited principally by the IDF’s war-fighting capabilities. Israel’s ability to defend itself and its citizens is constrained first and foremost by its shrinking capacity to defend itself diplomatically. Its enemies in the diplomatic arena have met with great success in their use of diplomatic condemnation and intimidation to force Israel to limit its military operations to the point where it is incapable of defeating its enemies outright. The flagship of the diplomatic war against Israel is the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement. Participants in the movement propagate and disseminate the libelous claim that Israel’s use of force in self-defense is inherently immoral and illegal. Over the years BDS activists’ assaults on Israel’s right to exist have become ever more shrill and radical. So, too, whereas just a few years ago their operations tended to be concentrated around military confrontations, today they are everyday occurrences. And their demands become greater and more openly anti-Semitic from week to week and day to day. Consider the events of the past seven days...
Obama: There is no military option to stop Iran

Obama: There is no military option to stop Iran

By: TAMAR PILEGGI, Times of Israel— US President Barack Obama told Israeli television that the emerging deal between Iran and world powers is the only way to prevent Tehran from obtaining nuclear weapons, and that “a military solution will not fix it.” In an excerpt aired Monday on Channel 2 of an interview with veteran journalist Ilana Dayan, Obama said that military action against Iran would not deter its nuclear ambitions and that he could prove that a “verifiable” agreement with Iran was the best way forward. “I can, I think, demonstrate, not based on any hope but on facts and evidence and analysis, that the best way to prevent Iran from having a nuclear weapon is a verifiable, tough agreement,” he said. “A military solution will not fix it. Even if the United States participates, it would temporarily slow down an Iranian nuclear program but it will not eliminate it,” Obama added. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday rejected Obama’s comments, warning that the emerging deal would “pave the way” for Iran to attain a nuclear arsenal. He said the deal would also see Iran’s economy boosted and thus enable it to engage in further terrorist activity. Touching on the deeply uneasy relationship between Obama and Netanyahu on the issue, Dayan asked the president about the possibility of Israel striking Iran without informing the US in advance. “I won’t speculate on that,” he said. “What I can say is, to the Israeli people: I understand your concerns and I understand your fears.” Obama has led the diplomatic initiative to try to end a 12-year international standoff between Tehran...
Sen. Graham vows he’d bid to halt funding for UN over Palestine state resolution

Sen. Graham vows he’d bid to halt funding for UN over Palestine state resolution

By: RAPHAEL AHREN, Times of Israel— A senior United States lawmaker and presidential hopeful on Wednesday threatened a “violent pushback” against any country that would support a United Nations Security Council resolution calling for Palestinian statehood. He also warned that a possible UN report likening alleged crimes against children by Israel and Boko Haram was an “outrage that would not go unanswered.” Speaking in Jerusalem, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) also said he would work to suspend US funding to the UN in retaliation for such a resolution, and vowed there would be bipartisan opposition in Congress against UN action of this kind. France has repeatedly announced its intention to propose a Security Council resolution that calls for the rapid creation of a Palestinian state based on the 1967 lines, with East Jerusalem as its capital. It is expected to present such a resolution in the coming days. “If there’s an effort by any nation to have the Security Council define the terms of the peace process, there will be a violent backlash from the United States Congress in a bipartisan fashion,” Graham told reporters at a press conference. “I am here to reinforce to our Israeli allies that there would be Republican and Democratic support to stop [such a resolution],” he said, referring to “the French effort or some other nation’s effort to take over the peace process.” As the chair of the Senate’s Appropriations Subcommittee on State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs, Graham is “in charge of the money we provide” to the UN, he said. “If the United Nations through the Security Council adopted a position to define...
Washington Watch: Road to White House goes through Jerusalem

Washington Watch: Road to White House goes through Jerusalem

By: DOUGLAS BLOOMFIELD, JPOST— Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker just returned from one of the rites of passage for presidential hopefuls: a pilgrimage to Israel. He followed a well-worn path that will be trod several times by his rivals who believe the road to the White House goes through Jerusalem. Ostensibly Walker, a Republican, and the others are honing their foreign policy credentials, and several will make other stops abroad, but that’s not the real reason. They will boast of meeting foreign leaders and engaging in (superficial) conversations they will later claim gave them great insight into world affairs. But the real goal is to win the pro-Israel primary by impressing deep-pocketed Jewish donors like casino mogul Sheldon Adelson. That’s why Walker quickly tweeted his picture shaking hands with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and another taken at the Western Wall. The unstated inscription on the pictures was, “Dear Sheldon, Hey, look at me here with your boy Bibi.” Walker echoed Netanyahu’s views about Palestinian statehood – maybe some day but not the foreseeable future – and how radical Islamist terror is the greatest threat facing the nation. Walker’s trip was paid for by his own PAC and by the Adelson-funded Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC), which has been running such trips for years. The group took Texas Governor George W. Bush in 1998, when he got a helicopter tour from Ariel Sharon; Walker also got a chopper tour, with a nephew of Moshe Dayan. Sen. Barack Obama went in 2008 after securing his party’s nomination. The presidential contender pilgrimages have been going on for months and will continue into next year. Sen....

Netanyahu: Jerusalem has and always will only be the capital of the Jewish people

By: HERB KEINON, JPOST— Jerusalem historically has been the only capital of the Jewish people, and so it will remain, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared Sunday at the government’s official Jerusalem Day ceremony at Ammunition Hill. “We need to tell the truth, without fear,” Netanyahu said. “This is where we began our path as a nation, this is our home and this is where we will stay.” In comments that left no doubt as to whether he would agree to share the capital with a Palestinian state, Netanyahu said Israel will ensure that the city remains open and tolerant. “Only under Israeli rule will there be freedom of worship for all religions in Jerusalem,” he said. “Believers pray at their holy sites not in spite of our rule in the city, but precisely because of it.” The prime minister, who recalled growing up in a divided Jerusalem and catching a glimpse of the Old City through binoculars from certain vantage points in the capital, said it would never again revert to being “wounded and split.” “We will forever preserve an undivided Jerusalem under Israeli sovereignty,” he said. “Who opposes our presence in Jerusalem?” he asked. “Those who refuse to recognize our right to exist as a sovereign nation in our own state. They see us as a foreign object that needs to be uprooted.” The prime minister also tied the Iranian threat to Jerusalem. “The Islamic extremists threaten Jerusalem, the Middle East and the entire world,” he said. “Sunni extremists like Islamic State and Shi’ite extremists like the leadership of the ayatollahs in Iran. The Sunni and Shi’ite extremists fight...
