Below is a partial listing of anti-Semitic incidences in France since the time when the Second Intifada spread to France. This is the continuing story of the uprising which began in Africa in the 1950 and today continues with the uprising led by the Islamic State. We need to bring 1,000 French Jews home this year.
March 10, 2015 – Marseille – Two 16 year-old Jewish boys, wearing visibly Jewish garb, were punched by two young men while walking home from a synagogue. The attackers reportedly said, “Dirty Jews, we’re going to exterminate you all, f—- you all.”
February 12, 2015 – Sarre-Union – Five teenagers overturned 250 graves in a Jewish cemetery while making Nazi salutes, spiting on the Jewish symbols and shouting slogans including “dirty Jews” and “Heil Hitler.”
February 10, 2015 – Paris – The word “Jew” was painted on 26 cars in the 16th arrondissement, a neighborhood with a sizable Jewish population. The police arrested a suspect.
January 20, 2015 – Paris – A 13 year-old boy wearing a visibly Jewish garb was tear-gassed on the street by three girls.
January 14, 2015 – Marseille – An unidentified man smashed a window at a Jewish library, and shouted “We’ll get all of you Jews,” before mounting a scooter that was being driven by someone else.
January 9, 2015 – Paris – Four Jewish men were killed by terrorist Amedy Coulibaly after Coulibaly stormed a Kosher supermarket and took shoppers hostage. French police eventually killed Coulibaly, and rescued the remaining hostages. Coulibaly was an accomplice of brothers Said and Cherif Kouachi who carried out the terrorist attack at the Charlie Hebdo newspaper, killing 12 people. The Kouachi brothers were also killed by French police.
December 22, 2014 – Paris – A bullet fired from an air gun pierced a window of the David Ben Ichay synagogue. No one was injured.
December 1, 2014 – Paris – Three armed individuals robbed a Jewish couple – a 19 year old woman and her 21 year old partner- at gunpoint, and raped the woman. The assailants reportedly told the couple they shouldn’t try to pretend they didn’t have money because they knew they were Jewish.
November 6, 2014 – Paris – A visibly Jewish male was beaten by a group of approximately 15 teens outside of a school.
August 12, 2014 – Marseilles -A visibly Jewish male was in his car and wanted to park in his building’s garage, but another car was blocking the entrance. He honked and a young man came out of the building and said, “Dirty Jew, you’re not in Gaza here. I’m going to kill you and your family.” The victim tried to flee into the building, but was followed by the young man and several members of his family who hit him in the face and head.
August 1, 2014 – Nice -Two men insulted two Jews near a local synagogue on Friday night, then came back at 3:30am Saturday with iron bars and broke a glass door and a surveillance camera. Police were close by and arrested them on the spot.
July 26, 2014 – Toulouse – Following an anti-Israel demonstration, a protestor threw two Molotov cocktails at the security kiosk of the Jewish Community Center. The cocktails exploded but missed their target, and the attacker was quickly arrested.
July 24, 2014 – Bobigny – A Jewish male was attacked by a group of people after his address was published on a Facebook page. He sustained light injuries.
July 23, 2014 – Paris -Police arrested 16 people, mostly minors, for yelling “Death to Jews!” at a patrons of a restaurant on rue de Rosier, one of the more famous streets in the old Jewish Quarter of Paris.
July 22, 2014 – Gap – During an anti-Israel demonstration yesterday in Gap (southeastern France) with 300 participants, ten hooded individuals broke a window where a Star of David was visible. They threatened to kill the woman inside, but didn’t enter and fled before the police arrived.
July 20, 2014 – Sarcelles -A kosher store that was attacked with an improvised grenade in 2012 was attacked again, apparently with a Molotov cocktail, during an illegal anti-Israel demonstration.
July 18, 2014 – Lyon – A young Jewish male was hit in the head as his attacker yelled, “I want to kill all the Jews.” The attacker was arrested on the spot by police.
July 18, 2014 – Lyon – A banner with “Israel Assassin” was hung on the gate of a synagogue.
July 13, 2014 – Paris – During a large anti-Israel demonstration two synagogues were attacked. Dozens of demonstrators broke off and tried to attack the Synagogue de la Roquette, while other demonstrators tried to enter the synagogue at Rue des Tournelles. Anti-Semitic slogans were reported in both incidents and chants of “Death to the Jews!” were heard during the demonstration.
July 7, 2014 – Paris – A 17-year-old Jewish girl was attacked and pepper sprayed in her face while the assailant made anti-Semitic remarks.
June 14, 2014 – Paris – Two men pointed what appeared to be firearms at police officers stationed outside a synagogue.
June 14, 2014 – Garges les Gonesses – A knife and other objects were hurled into the interior yard of a synagogue.
June 7, 2014 – Sarcelles – Two visibly Jewish teenagers were sprayed with tear gas.
May 30, 2014 – Paris – A Jewish man was attacked by three assailants who said to him: “We know it was you who called the cops yesterday. You Jews are all the same.” They then proceeded to physically assualt the individual, shouting “You’re a dirty Jew. We know where you live, we know your wife, your kids, your car.” The man sustained a broken elbow during the incident.
May 24, 2014 – Paris – Two Jewish brothers, aged 19 and 22, who were on their way to a local synagogue, were beaten with brass knuckles by two assailants. One victim was hospitalized with a severe eye injury.
May 13, 2014 – Paris – A Jewish woman and her baby were assaulted while waiting for a bus. An unidentified woman shook the baby’s stroller and shouted at the mother: “Dirty Jewess, enough with your children already, you Jews have too many children, screw you!”
March 10, 2014 – Paris – A visibly identifiable Jewish male was attacked by two men with a stun gun near a local synagogue. He was not seriously hurt, but did require hospitalization.
March 2, 2014 – Paris – An orthodox Jewish man was assaulted and beaten on a Metro train. The four assailants, who were described as of Arab descent, reportedly shouted “Jews” before the attack.
April 23, 2013 – Paris – A rabbi and his son were stabbed near the Beth-El synagogue by an Iranian man who had recently escaped a psychiatric hospital. The attacker stabbed the rabbi in the neck causing light injuries, while the rabbi’s son was lightly cut when he came to his defense. The attacker was subdued by bystanders and turned over to the police.
March 14, 2013 – Vitry-Sur-Seine – Three men accosted a Jewish Kippa-wearing teenager on the subway, and threatened to do to him “what Mohammed Merah did.” They added that Merah “was right to do what he did…We will kill all of you Jews — one day we will kill a Jew.” Mohammed Merah is a reference to the 23-year-old Islamist who last year killed four Jews at a school in Toulouse.
March 12, 2013 – Lyon – A fake bomb was found near the Hillel Center, a Jewish institution in the city. Police successfully destroyed the device.
February 5, 2013 – Toulouse – A woman with a history of aggression toward Jews threatened a 16 year-old boy wearing a kippah with a knife. The incident occurred close to the Jewish school, where three children and a rabbi were murdered by Mohammed Merah, an Islamic radical terrorist.
Februrary 4, 2013 – Marseille – A 20-year-old Jewish man wearing a Star of David pendant was mugged and robbed twice outside Marseille’s main train station. Two men on a scooter tore the chain off his neck and called him a “dirty Jew.” Moments later, another group of young men approached the victim and hurled anti-Semitic insults before stealing an MP3 player and 100 Euros. They also reportedly hit the victim.
January 3, 2013 – Toulouse – Anti-Semitic slogans, including a swastika alongside the words “SS” and “get the f*** out”, were graffitied on a local chapter of the Paris Psychoanalytical Society. The incident occurred less the a year after a terrorist killed a rabbi and three students at a Jewish school in the city.
October 28, 2012 – Aix-les-Bains – Anti-Semitic fliers referring to Jews as “the main people responsible for the decadence of the White People and the invasion of sub-races” were mailed to town residents.
October 22, 2012 – Paris – A 12 year-old Jewish boy was stand his school bus stop, when two men in their 40s, speaking Arabic, began to insult him and then hit him with their belts. Passersby intervened and the attackers fled.
October 9, 2012 – Avignon – The plaque at the entrance to the Jewish cemetery, with a Magen David and marked “Jewish Cemetery”, was smashed.
October 9, 2012 – Paris – A 19 year old was shot in the arm with a pellet gun as he was leaving a synagogue, leaving him with a bruise.
October 5, 2012 – Seine St. Denis – A family was eating dinner in their sukkah when a group of individuals began chanting and using their hands to make horns on their heads. A few minutes later cobblestones and chunks of asphalt rained down through the top of the sukkah. The family reported hearing: “Dirty Jews, we’ll get you – Jews we’ll have your skin – Get out of here – Go back home,” as well as some words in Arabic. One woman was injured when a stone hit her back.
September 19, 2012 – Sarcelles – A firebomb was thrown into a Kosher supermarket by two masked assailants, causing at least one injury.
September 4, 2012 – Montreuil – “F— the Jews. F— the school.” was spray-painted in huge letters at the entrance of the Paul-Eluard public high school in the Paris suburb of Montreuil. The high school is located near a Jewish trade school, ORT Daniel Mayer.
August 7, 2012 – Paris – A 17 year-old Jewish girl was severely beaten by an 18 year-old Arab girl at a mall in a Paris suburb. The attacker made anti-Semitic insults during the incident, including “Dirty Jew, I’m going to put you in the ground.” Police at the mall arrested the assailant.
July 20, 2012 – Paris – A synagogue was desecrated for the third time in 10 days, when vandals threw prayer books and shawls on the floor and shattered the building’s windows.
July 5, 2012 – Toulouse – A 17-year-old student of the Ozar Hatorah Jewish school, where four Jews were murdered by Mohammed Merah on March 19, was assaulted on a train going from Toulouse to Lyon. The two young men responsible for the attack were arrested.
June 8, 2012 – Sarcelles – An 18-year-old Jew was physically assaulted and had a phone stolen by assailants who were shouting anti-Semitic insults.
June 2, 2012 – Lyon – Three Jewish youth wearing skullcaps were assaulted while walking to a Jewish school for Shabbat services. A group of more than 10 assailants surrounded the youths chanting “dirty Jew,” and proceeded to attack them with hammers and bars, hitting two in the head and one in the arm.
March 26, 2012 – Paris – A 12-year-old Jewish boy was beaten outside the Ozar Hatorah Jewish school in Paris by youths reciting anti-Semitic slogans. The boy was hit and punched in the back of his head as he left the school.
March 19, 2012 – Toulouse – Four Jews were shot and killed at the Ozar Hatorah Jewish school by an armed terrorist on a motorcycle, later identified by authorities as Mohammed Merah. Rabbi Jonathan Sandler, 30, and his two children Aryeh, 6, and Gabriel, 3, were killed as they were entering the school premises. Merah then entered the school, continuing to shoot at students and faculty, and eventually set his sights on 8-year-old Miriam Monsonego, the daughter of the school’s principal, whom he chased down and killed. Merah is also believed to be responsible for the killing of three French soldiers the previous week. In a phone call to a French television station, Merah stated that he targeted the Jewish school to avenge the killing of children in Gaza. Reports indicate that Merah traveled to and received training in Pakistan and Afghanistan and identified with the terrorist organization Al Qaeda. He may have also had links to Forsane Alizza, a radical organization that was banned by the French government in January for supporting terrorism. On March 22, following a 32-hour standoff with French police, Merah was killed in his apartment complex.
June 20, 2011 – Paris – A 40-year-old Jewish man was attacked by two assailants who grabbed his bag with his tallit (prayer shawl) and tefillin (phylacteries). The attackers punched and kicked him in the head and body, while shouting anti-Semitic insults. The victim suffered deep bruises on his face, head lacerations that required suturing, and a fractured wrist.
June 18, 2011 – Villeurbane – A 21-year-old identifiably Jewish man was assaulted in a suburb of Lyon. He was accosted by an individual who said, “turn around and go back, you son-of-a-bitch Jew.” The attacker left, then returned with a hammer and hit the victim on the head. A dozen other assailants joined in, kicking the victim and hitting him with a nightstick. The victim was hospitalized with head and other injuries.
May 7, 2011 – Marseilles – An 11-year-old Jewish girl on her way to a synagogue was accosted by a teenager who demanded to know if she was Jewish. The assailant threatened the girl with a knife and reportedly said, “You are going to dirty meeting.” Another teenager rescued the girl, who took refuge inside the synagogue.
May 7, 2011 – Marseilles – Three Jewish boys were beaten during a soccer match by a dozen attackers, who shouted “dirty Jews, we’re going to f— your corpses.” One boy sustained a serious eye injury; the other two were only slightly injured.
May 7, 2011 – Nancy – A Jewish school was vandalized with anti-Semitic slogans and, evidence at the scene suggested, attempted arson. Minister of Education Luc Chatel denounced the attack as an attack on France.
April 7, 2011 – Lyon – A 21-year-old Jewish student was shot four times with a pellet gun in an attack involving two unidentified assailants. The incident started when one of the perpetrators asked the student’s name. After he responded, the perpetrator reportedly said, “You don’t look like an Antoine, you look like a Jew, you’re definitely a Jew.” When the victim confirmed he was Jewish, one of the assailants shot him. The student was also beaten on his head and body with the butt of the gun. He was hospitalized with wounds to the head, neck, abdomen, and arm.
March 19, 2011 – Garges-lès-Gonesse – A rock was thrown through a window of a synagogue during an evening Purim celebration.
March 17, 2011 – Pont de Heruy – A 15-year-old Jewish boy was beaten by a group of about a dozen teenagers. The attackers threw him to the ground and beat him while yelling anti-Semitic insults.
October 11, 2010 – Paris – A Jewish high school student had a sticker put on his back that read, “I boycott the Israeli occupier.”
October 3, 2010 – Strasbourg – Swastikas and anti-Semitic graffiti were painted on the house of a Jewish doctor.
September 29, 2010 – Aubervilliers – A Jewish teenager on his way to a synagogue was attacked and robbed by several individuals, who said “Dirty Jew, I’m going to take out my knife” and “We Algerians are going to kill you.”
September 13, 2010 – Toulouse – A synagogue in a suburb of Toulouse was burglarized and “dirty Jews” was written on the ark housing the Torahs.
August 24, 2010 – Paris – An anonymous letter with a death threat and nine bullets was sent to the synagogue in Drancy (a suburb of Paris where the Vichy government established a transit camp and from where 65,000 Jews were deported to death camps). The death threat read, “dirty Jew, we’re going to put nine bullets in each of you.” According to reports, the letter also contained a swastika and an allusion to the Gaza flotilla, and a similar letter was received by a synagogue in Stains, another Paris suburb.
August 17, 2010 – Toulouse – A Jewish woman was accosted on a plaza by two men, who reproached her for buying food and not respecting the Ramadan fast. When the woman responded that she was Jewish, the two men called her a “dirty Jew” and hit her in the head, causing her to fall to the ground. A security guard who was present did not intervene. When police investigators later asked the guard why he did nothing, he responded that he was in a hurry to get home to break the Ramadan fast at sundown. The attack reportedly occurred at 7:30 p.m. Sundown on that day was at 8:55 p.m.
August 3, 2010 – Marmande – A Holocaust memorial in the town of Marmande, near Bordeaux, was vandalized. The monument, which lists the names of camps to which French Jews were deported, was spray-painted with “lies,” “Zionism,” and dollar signs. Nearby the same red paint was used to draw swastikas and “France for the French!”
July 29, 2010 – Paris – Swastikas were spray-painted on several kosher shops and a Jewish school in the center of Paris.
July 22, 2010 – Melun – Anti-Semitic graffiti and swastikas were spray-painted on the front of the town’s only synagogue and over the entire surrounding wall. The public prosecutor of the town, southeast of Paris, said that highest priority would be given to the investigation, as this was the first such attack in Melun.
July 21, 2010 – Wolfisheim – Twenty-seven graves were desecrated at a Jewish cemetery near Strasbourg.
June 13, 2010 – Nice – A group of young men of North African descent threw rocks at a Chabad rabbi while shouting, “Jew murderers.”
June 7, 2010 – Paris – A man of North African origin walked up the aisle of a train, shouting, “Are you a Jew? Are you a Jew?” When he came upon a man whom he took for a Jew, he shouted, “I don’t like Jews! I’m going to beat you. Did you see what your cousins did in Gaza?” He punched him in the face and threw him to the ground. The victim was hospitalized.
June 4, 2010 – Paris – Five students, ages 14 to 21, were subjected to anti-Semitic taunts and threats at a subway station in the Paris suburb of Brunoy. Two men reportedly insulted them, yelled “Death to you,” “Jews, we’ll kill you all,” and “Fofana, Fofana” (the name of the leader of the Gang of Barbarians who tortured and murdered Ilan Halimi in 2006). One reportedly showed a knife and made a sign of throat-cutting. After a student called the police, the men were arrested in a nearby supermarket.
June 7, 2010 – Metz – A Molotov cocktail was thrown at a Jewish elder care home; no damage was reported.
June 6, 2010 – Nice – A rabbi was insulted on the street and rocks were thrown at him, injuring his leg.
April 30, 2010 – Nimes – Three men, described as being of Arab descent, assaulted an 80-year-old Jewish man with tear gas in front of the town’s synagogue and spray-painted “F— the Jews” on the wall. As of May 5, police have one suspect in custody and are searching for the two others. The attack was widely condemned, including by the Muslim Council of France.
March 18, 2010 – Marseille – “Jews are whores” was spray-painted on the Ohel Yaacov synagogue.
January 26, 2010 – Strasbourg – Swastikas and anti-Semitic phrases such as “Juden Raus” (Jews out) were painted on more than 30 headstones in a local Jewish cemetery. Some of the headstones were also damaged or overturned.
September 8, 2009 – Marseille – A local Jewish school, ORT Bramson High School, was attacked by vandals who threw aerosol cans soaked with flammable liquid at the school building. Nearly 400 students were in the building at the time of the attack, but none were injured.

July 1, 2009 – Lannion – Many residents received leaflets containing anti-Semitic language in their mailboxes. The mayor urged the police to find those responsible as quickly as possible.
April 11, 2009 – Drancy – A five-foot black swastika and several anti-Semitic slogans were painted on a railway wagon that was used to deport French Jews. Two other large swastikas were daubed on a commemorative monument and on the wall of a nearby shop.
March 9, 2009 – Creteil – An 18 year old Jewish youth, wearing a yarmulke, was attacked by three strangers on his way to synagogue for Purim. They threw objects at him, including a jar of mustard that struck him on the head. The resulting injuries required stitches. The victim was able to provide description of his attackers to the police who apprehended them.
January 24, 2009 – Paris – A kosher supermarket’s warehouse was firebombed, causing a major fire in the eastern Paris suburb of Montreuil. An unused Molotov cocktail was found at the scene.
January 17, 2009 – Creteil – Two 16-year-old Jews were beaten in front of a kosher restaurant by a gang that shouted “Palestine will win, dirty Jews!” One of the victims suffered head injuries, and the other was hit in the back. Seven were arrested in connection with the confrontation.
January 17, 2009 – Hayangue – A Molotov cocktail was thrown at a synagogue and burned the door.
January 15, 2009 – Fontenay-sous-Bois – Carjackers shouted anti-Semitic threats and stabbed a man four times after noticing his Star of David necklace. The victim suffered stab wounds to the head and neck.
January 15, 2009 – Villeneuve-Saint-Georges – A synagogue in a small town southeast of Paris was firebombed, causing the door to catch fire.

January 14, 2009 – Mulhouse – “Death to Israel”, “Long live Palestine” and “(expletive) France” were spray-painted on a synagogue.
January 13, 2009 – Lille – A swastika and the letters “ZOG” were painted on a synagogue. “ZOG” is a common anti-Semitic acronym for “Zionist Occupied Government.”
January 11-12, 2009 – Bischeim – Three Molotov cocktails were thrown at a synagogue in Bischeim, near Strasbourg, damaging the exterior. No one was injured.
January 11, 2009 – Paris – Molotov cocktails were thrown at a synagogue in Saint Denis, a northern suburb of Paris. The firebombs bounced off the reinforced window and caused damage to an adjacent Jewish restaurant.
January 8, 2009 – Nice – “Death to Jews” was spray-painted outside of a primary school in Nice.
January 7, 2009 – Villiers-le-Bel – A 15-year-old girl accused a gang of ten people, including three schoolmates, of an anti-Semitic assault in a Paris suburb. She said she was thrown to the ground, kicked, and punched, and that the attackers told her that they were avenging Palestinians.
January 5, 2009 – Lingolsheim – A synagogue in a small town near Strasbourg was vandalized with graffiti, including the word “assassins.”
January 5, 2009 – Toulouse – A burning car with a Molotov cocktail was rammed into the door of a synagogue while a rabbi was giving a class inside. Another car was also prepared with Molotov cocktails, but an alarm scared off the attackers before it was used.
January 4, 2009 – Paris – A 29-year-old Jewish man was attacked at a Paris subway station by a gang of about 20 people who yelled “Palestine will win.” They hit him in the face and reportedly filmed the scene.
January 3, 2009 – Toulon – A car at the synagogue in Toulon was burned.
January 3, 2009 – Metz – An anti-Israel protest was directed at the synagogue in Metz.
January 2, 2009 – Valenton – A Jewish doctor, 70, was shot twice in the back as he left his office in a small town south of Paris. The police have no witnesses and no alternative theories about why he was attacked.
January 1, 2009 – Bordeaux – Two kosher food shops were vandalized.
December 27, 2008 — Villeurbanne –- A Jewish student wearing a yarmulke was walking with his fiancée in the town center, when they were attacked from behind by three youths. The student suffered a broken nose.
September 6, 2008 –Paris– Three identifiably Jewish teenage boys were attacked by a group of youths near a local B’nei Akiva office in an attack the police and government officials have described as motivated by anti-Semitism. The boys were briefly hospitalized. It was the second anti-Jewish assault to take place in the 19th District in three months. More
August 19, 2008 – Marseille – A 67-year-old shop owner was attacked with by a knife-wielding man, who called him a “dirty Jew.” The victim suffered stab wounds in the arm and was hospitalized.
June 21, 2008 – A teenager was in critical condition after a violent assault by a gang of youths who beat him with metal bars. The 17-year-old youth, who suffered several broken ribs and a fractured skull, was apparently singled out because he was identifiably Jewish. Police arrested two men, who were charged with attempted murder with the aggravating circumstance of anti-Semitic intent. President Nicholas Sarkozy condemned the attack and called on France to renew its determination to fight racism and anti-Semitism in all forms. More
June 10-11, 2008 – Paris – A marble plaque memorializing the deportation of 90 Jewish children to Nazi death camps during the Holocaust was vandalized and broken beyond repair. Paris Mayor Bertrand Delanoë denounced the attack and pledged to erect a new memorial on the same spot.
February 8, 2008 – Amiens – Three policemen were suspended after making Nazi salutes and shouting anti-Semitic and white supremacist slogans in a local bar. Interior Minister Michele Alliot-Marie confirmed the incident and condemned the attack, stating, “this intolerable behavior … is in total contradiction with the police force’s code of ethics.” The police inspector-general launched a disciplinary investigation.
August 9, 2007 – Noisy-le-Grand – A 23-year-old Jewish woman was attacked by two youths who beat her and shouted anti-Semitic remarks. They shouted “You dirty Jew” at the woman, who wore a Star of David pendant on her neck, before stealing her mobile phone and beating her. She suffered from multiple bruises on her face and the rest of her body. One of the alleged perpetrators has been arrested.
July 27, 2007 – Paris – A 23-year-old man wearing traditional Jewish Orthodox clothing was violently attacked while on his way to a synagogue with his brother-in-law and three year old son. The attacker, apparently irritated to see the child walking so slowly, began to hoot and shine his car’s lights as the three entered a pedestrian crossing. The victim gestured for the man to be quiet, signaling that pedestrians have the right of way. After shouting anti-Semitic insults, the attacker got out of his car and beat his victim with his hands and an iron bar. The Jewish man suffered a broken arm and injuries to his head. Police arrested the perpetrator who will be charged with “violence against a person because of his religion.”
April 26, 2007 – Marseille – A 22-year-old Jewish woman was attacked by two men of Middle Eastern appearance in the parking lot of a train station in Marseilles’s La Rose neighborhood, home to both Arab immigrants and French Jews. As described to the Police, the incident began as a robbery before the assailants noticed their victim’s necklace, which bore a Jewish “chai” pendant. The attackers then began hitting her in the head, pulled out a knife, cut a lock of her hair, and slashed open her shirt. The men drew a swastika on her chest and fled the scene. The investigating prosecutor has confirmed that the attack was anti-Semitic in nature.
April 19, 2007 – Paris – A rabbi was insulted and beaten at a Paris train station. Before knocking and punching his victim in the face, the attacker reportedly shouted: “Dirty Jew, you are looking at me. I will smash your face, dirty Jew.” No arrests have been made.
April 1, 2007 – Lille – Vandals damaged more than fifty tombs in the Jewish section of a cemetery in Lille in northern France. The act of anti-Semitic vandalism was condemned by both President Jacques Chirac and Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin, who called on the Interior and Justice ministries to ensure that those responsible for the act were identified and convicted.
May 28, 2006 – Paris – Members of a black extremist group marched through a Jewish quarter in central Paris shouting anti-Semitic slogans. Police broke up the march. Security was increased in the area.
March 12, 2006 – Paris – Vandals broke into a synagogue in the Paris suburb of Sarcelles and threw religious objects to the ground. Police were investigating.
March 6, 2006 – Lyon – A Jewish pupil was attacked and kicked in the face by four youths. Police placed the youths in custody for violence and injury “with anti-Semitic character.”
March 4, 2006 – Sarcelles – A 28-year-old Jewish man was beaten by youths who made anti-Semitic remarks during the assault. The man suffered a dislocated shoulder. The police have arrested four suspects.
March 3, 2006 – Sarcelles – A 17-year-old Jewish man, the son of a local rabbi, was attacked by two men. The victim suffered a broken nose. The incident occurred near the synagogue of Sarcelles in a district known as “Little Jerusalem,” where there is a sizable Jewish community.
March 3, 2006 – Sarcelles – An 18-year-old Jewish man was attacked by a group of five men, who threw him to the ground while shouting insults and anti-Semitic threats. They escaped with the victim’s cellular phone.
February 13, 2006 – Bagneux – Police believe the kidnapping and murder of a young Jewish man in Paris was motivated by anti-Semitism. Ilan Halimi, 23, was found naked, tortured and burned south of Paris after being held for three weeks by a gang demanding a large ransom. He died of his injuries shortly afterwards. On February 23, French police arrested 12 of the members of the gang. Another suspect was arrested in Belgium. During the investigation police reportedly found literature linking some suspects to Muslim causes and there are indications that the torture and killing was an anti-Semitic crime. Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy on February 21 described the crime as anti-Semitic in nature.
January 9, 2006 – Crйteil – Two Jewish boys wearing yarmulkes were attacked in front of a train station in Crйteil, a Paris suburb. The 11- and 12-year-olds were approached by four men of African and Arab origin, who hurled anti-Semitic epithets at them before striking one of the boys to the ground and holding the other forcefully. One of the victims suffered a broken nose. Police arrested four suspects in the assault.
January 7, 2006 – Sarcelles – A synagogue was vandalized, with the words “Juden raus” (“Jews get out”) and “Death to Sharon” etched into the roof. A man later confessed to using an ice-pick to vandalize the building.
July 20, 2005 — Paris — A Jewish man was walking home from synagogue with his three children when the family was backed into a corner and verbally harassed by a group of men. Police were investigating the possibility that the assault was linked to an incident in Sarcelles the day before.
July 19, 2005 — Sarcelles — A young Jewish man was assaulted and then called a “dirty Jew” by an unidentified group of men.
July 14, 2005 — Stains — A Molotov cocktail was thrown at the entrance of a synagogue in Stains, near Paris. The attack coincided with other disturbances in the Paris area on July 14th, the French national holiday.
May 9, 2005 – Sarreguemines — Vandals toppled and smashed dozens of tombstones at a Jewish cemetery in eastern France. About 64 of the Sarreguemines cemetery’s 500 tombstones were damaged. After being arrested, two boys, 14 and 12 years old, admitted to toppling the tombstones “for fun.”
April 16, 2005 – Avignon — A Jewish cemetery in Avignon, Southern France was vandalized. The Star of David that hung on a pillar at the cemetery’s entrance was partially wrenched off and racist slogans were scrawled on the window of the information desk, among other damage discovered by a rabbi.
March 29, 2005 — Paris – Two homemade bombs were thrown at a Jewish-owned pastry shop in the Paris suburb of Sarcelles. The explosion, in proximity to the local synagogue, caused little damage.
February 20, 2005 – Paris – Firefighters extinguished a blaze that lightly charred a wooden rail car at a memorial in the Paris suburb of Drancy, the site of a World War II transit camp used to transport most of the 76,000 Jews deported from France to Auschwitz. A handwritten note found at the site referred to the “Islamic group for Palestine” and carried the name “Bin Laden” on it next to an inverted swastika. French Interior Minister Dominique de Villepin, while referring to both this attack and another recent attack in which vandals scrawled a dozen swastikas, the SS initials of Adolf Hitler’s guard and the words “Get out!” on the outer walls of the Grand Mosque of Paris said the attacks were “completely unspeakable, completely ignominious.”
October 29/30, 2004 – Brumath – Close to 100 gravestones were desecrated at a Jewish cemetery in Brumath, just outside Strasbourg. The vandals painted swastikas and “SS” symbols on 92 Jewish gravestones. French President Jacques Chirac called the desecrations “intolerable.”
August 26, 2004 – Paris – The director of the main public library, the Bibliotheque Publique d’Information, announced that anti-Semitic inscriptions were found stamped into a dozen books about the Dreyfus case and legal issues. The vandals stamped the edge of the books with the words “Against the Jewish Mafia and Jewish Racism” with the addresses of a Holocaust denial and Islamic propaganda Web sites.
August 14, 2004 – Paris – Anti-Semitic graffiti, including a sign saying “death to Jews” and a swastika, was found scrawled on a wall on the grounds of Notre Dame Cathedral. Police are investigating.
August 9, 2004 – Lyon – Some 60 gravestones were vandalized with swastikas in a Jewish cemetery in Lyon in southeastern France. On August 15, a 24 year-old man turned himself in to Paris police and admitted to desecrating the graves in Lyon. He did not appear to have links to far-right groups and told investigators that he was inspired by inspired by a television documentary about American racist groups. July 28, 2004 – Saverne – Thirty-two tombstones were vandalized with swastikas, Stars of David and satanic “666” symbols in a Jewish cemetery in the Alsatian town of Saverne, north of Strasbourg. The vandalism was discovered by a family member visiting the cemetery.
June 11, 2004 – Rivesaltes – A Holocaust-era mural painted by Jewish children in a transit camp who were being held before being sent to Nazi death camps, was discovered vandalized in southwestern France. A historian visiting the site, where 4,500 Jews and Gypsies were held, found that the mural had been chiseled off the wall. According to The Independent, in 1942, a Swiss nurse at the camp asked the children to paint a Swiss landscape on the infirmary wall. The painting was discovered in 1999 and was to become the central exhibition of a Holocaust museum at the Rivesaltes transit camp. Half of the inmates of the transit camp, including 400 children, were later killed in Auschwitz. French government officials condemned the incident, and the Interior Minister promised that the mural would be restored.
June 4, 2004 – Epinay-sur-Seine – A 17-year-old Jewish student was stabbed with by a man with a knife shouting “Allahu Aqbar” (G-d is great in Arabic). The student was leaving a Jewish school in the northern Parisian suburbs. The attacker tried to hurt two other students with a screwdriver. The student was in serious, but not critical condition. President Jacques Chirac condemned the attack and the French Interior Minister, Dominque de Villepin, visited the scene.
May 30, 2004 – Boulogne-Billancourt – A 17-year-old Jewish youth was attacked outside his home in a Paris suburb by a group of young men yelling anti-Semitic slogans. The youth is the son of a local rabbi. President Jacques Chirac condemned the attack.
May 7, 2004 — Villier-le-Bel – A small explosive device was discovered outside a synagogue north of Paris. According to media reports, the bomb was in a bag with the writing “Boom anti-Jews” and a swastika. On May 14, an 18-year-old man was found guilty of putting the fake bombs on the grounds of the synagogue and was sentenced to two months in prison.
May 6/7, 2004 – Verdun – A memorial to Jewish soldiers who died in the Battle of Verdun was vandalized. Nazi slogans and symbols were scrawled on the memorial. The Battle of Verdun was fought between French and German armies near the northern French city in 1916. In November 2004, a 22-year-old man was sentenced to a year in prison for perpetrating the attack.
May 4, 2004 – Paris – In the suburb of Cretiel, a rabbi and his young son were attacked on their way home from Friday night services.
April 29/30, 2004 – Colmar – A Jewish cemetery in the Alsace region in eastern France was vandalized. At least 127 headstones were spray painted with swastikas and anti-Semitic statements. The cemetery dates back to the 18th century. The attack was condemned by numerous French officials, including President Jacques Chirac.
April 4, 2004 — Valenciennes – A synagogue in northern France was defaced with neo-Nazi slogans, including swastikas, and “One people, one empire, one leader, 59 years, sieg heil.” The 59 is believed to be a reference to the 59 years since the death of Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler.
March 23, 2004 – Toulon – A Jewish synagogue and community center was set on fire. According to media reports, the arsonist broke a window and threw a Molotov cocktail into the building. There was minor damage and no injuries.
January 23, 2004 – Villiers-au-Bois – Two gravestones marked with Stars of David were damaged in the World War I cemetery of Villiers-au-Bois near the English Channel coast.
January 20, 2004 – Strasbourg – A parked minibus used to transport children to a Jewish school in the eastern French city of Strasbourg was burned. Police are investigating the attack as an arson.

November 24, 2003 — Marseille — Swastikas and racist slogans were scrawled on about a dozen tombs in the Jewish cemetery of Trois Lucs. The cemetery was the scene of similar anti-Semitic attacks in 2001, when graffiti demanding the liberation of convinced Nazi collaborator Maurice Papon were scrawled on several tombs.
October 17, 2003 — Paris — A rabbi was verbally attacked and physically assaulted in a Paris suburb. On the way to the synagogue, several men pushed the rabbi and punched him in the face. Police have arrested two men in connection with the incident, which was described as anti-Semitic in nature.
July 25, 2003 – Paris – A synagogue in the Paris suburb of Saint-Denis was ransacked and desecrated with anti-Semitic graffiti. Prayer books were scattered on the floor, the Torah scrolls opened and money was stolen. “Juif=mort” (Jew = death) was scrawled on an outside wall.
July 20, 2003 – Venissieux – Two plaques at a Holocaust memorial were defaced and broken. The plaques mark the site of a transit camp where hundreds of Jews from the Lyon region were rounded up before being sent to Nazi death camps in August 1942.
March 22, 2003 – Paris – A number of Jews, including teenagers, were chased and attacked by anti-war protesters outside the headquarters of a Jewish youth organization. The protesters were described by witnesses as “wearing kaffiyahs.” One teenage boy was hospitalized for injuries he sustained while being beaten by demonstrators.
The number of violent anti-Semitic attacks in France increased sharply in 2002, to 193 attacks, up from 32 in 2001. Anti-Semitic attacks accounted for more than half of the total number of racist attacks in France in 2002, according to a report from the National Consulting Committee on Human Rights, an independent watchdog group. In 2002, the total number of racist attacks in France quadrupled to 313, the highest level of incidents in a decade. The group noted a “real explosion” in violent incidents against Jews.
